Requires Department of Education to provide professional development opportunities related to reading disabilities; mandates certain school district personnel annually compete two hours of professional development related to reading disabilities.
Directs State Board of Education to incorporate the International Dyslexia Association’s definition of dyslexia into special education regulations. Defines dyslexia as “a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin.
This resolution urges the State Board of Education to develop an endorsement to the instructional certificate for teachers of students with dyslexia and to establish eligibility and training requirements for the endorsement.
Provides for instruction in dyslexia awareness and methods of teaching students with dyslexia for candidates for teaching certificates and current teachers and paraprofessionals.
Establishes New Jersey Reading Disabilities Task Force, providing:
1. The Legislature finds and declares that:
a. Approximately 85% of all children who receive special education services have basic deficits in language and reading; and
