Concerning researching effective methods for assisting early-grade students with dyslexia, and, in connection therewith, making an appropriation.

Relating to public education; to establish the Alabama Literacy Act; to implement steps to improve the reading proficiency of public school kindergarten to third grade students and ensure that those students are able to read at or above grade level by the end of the third grade by monitoring the progression of each student from one grade to another, in part, by his or her proficiency in reading.

An act addressing dyslexia in Montana; providing a definition of dyslexia and reiterating the existing obligation of school districts to identify students with dyslexia and evaluate them for special education and related services; requiring school districts to screen students for dyslexia and address the needs of students identified with dyslexia; requiring the office of public instruction to provide guidance to school districts on identifying and serving students with dyslexia; Emphasizing the need for teachers and other school personnel to be prepared to Identify and serve students with dyslexia; and providing an effective date and an
applicability date.

Requires the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) to develop a dyslexia plan and training opportunities that are intended to screen students for risk factors and to provide dyslexia specialists, support and resources to school districts and charter schools

AN ACT to create and enact two new sections to chapter 15.1-32 of the North Dakota Century Code, relating to reading screenings and a dyslexia screening pilot program; to provide for a report to the legislative management; and to provide for an exemption.

State Government - As introduced, requires an agency that requires an examination to be administered to a person applying for a license to engage in an occupation, trade, or profession to provide reasonable accommodations to a person diagnosed with dyslexia. - Amends TCA Title 4.

These two bills require that youths committed to the division of Youth Services and adult prison inmates receive reading assessments and dyslexia screenings; to be provided with reading and dyslexia services; and to require that Youth Services and state Corrections teachers know best practices of scientific reading instruction.

Requiring each county board of education, beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, to ensure that a certain student is screened to identify if the student is at risk for reading difficulties; requiring the screening instrument to be based on foundational reading skills that include phonological and phonemic awareness and processing; requiring the county board to provide supplemental reading instruction and parental notification in cases where it is determined a student is at risk for reading difficulties; etc.
