SECTION 1. Section 1 of Chapter 287 of the Acts of 2012 is hereby amended by inserting after the word “assessments”, in line 40, the following words:- “, identification of reading disabilities including dyslexia”.

SECTION 1. Section 1 of Chapter 287 of the Acts of 2012 is hereby amended by inserting after the word “assessments”, in line 40, the following words:- “, identification of reading disabilities including dyslexia”.
Defines and provides screening for dyslexia. Defines dyslexia broadly as a neurological condition with symptoms including “difficulty in acquiring language skills; inability to comprehend oral or written language; difficulty in rhyming words; difficulty in naming letters, recognizing letters, matching letters to sounds, and blending sounds when speaking and reading words; difficulty recognizing and remembering sight words; consistent transposition of number sequences, letter reversals, inversions, and substitutes and trouble in replication of content.”
An Act to address the special education needs of children with dyslexia. Creates and sets standard for an educational specialization in dyslexia for teachers. Requires that a child who has been determined by evaluation to have dyslexia,the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team hall consider and specifically address access to evidence-based, sequenced, explicit multisensory reading instruction; access to assistive technology; and access to teachers and teaching assistants who have obtained the dyslexia teaching endorsement.
