Kentucky 2009 HB 409 – Required Screening

AN ACT relating to programs for children with dyslexia or related disorders. Create a new section of KRS Chapter 157 to require that by the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year students entering the second year of primary shall be screened for dyslexia according to administrative regulations adopted by the Kentucky Board of Education; require local school districts to provide professional development for primary and elementary teachers responsible for instructing students with dyslexia; amend KRS 157.200 to expand the definition of specific learning disability to include dyslexia; require the Kentucky Department of Education to develop and disseminate to schools a sample curriculum appropriate for students with dyslexia.

Requests the public education department to include dyslexia in the state definition of disabilities for the purpose of interpreting the federal individuals with disabilities education act, to identify effective interventions for students with dyslexia and to establish certification criteria for specialists who assist students with dyslexia

New Jersey 2008-2009 AB 877 – Dyslexia Awareness

Provides for instruction in dyslexia awareness and methods of teaching students with dyslexia for candidates for teaching certificates and current teachers and paraprofessionals. This bill directs the Commissioner of Education to: (1) develop recommendations for dyslexia awareness instruction and methods of teaching students with dyslexia for teacher preparation programs; and (2) develop recommendations to incorporate dyslexia awareness instruction and methods of teaching students with dyslexia for teacher and paraprofessional in-Service and other training programs. The recommendations must be submitted to the State Board of Education.
